Hibernian have signed winger Rabbi Matondo on a contract until the end of the season. The 26-year-old former Rangers player impressed during a trial at the club's training camp in Spain and the deal includes an option for a further year.
Matondo made an immediate impact during the La Manga camp, scoring twice and providing two assists in two bounce games, including one against Kilmarnock. His performances convinced new manager Marink Reedijk to make the Wales international his first signing since taking charge last month.
Player background
A product of the Cardiff City and Manchester City academies, Matondo brings top-flight experience from a four-year spell at Rangers, where he made 70 appearances and was part of the side that won the 2023-24 Scottish League Cup. He also played for Schalke 04 and had loan spells at Stoke City, Cercle Brugge, and Hannover 96. He became a free agent after a short stint with Norwegian side Brann ended in August.
Manager's view
Reedijk was clear about the attributes Matondo adds to a squad sitting 10th in the Premiership standings with seven points from seven games, having scored 8 goals and conceded 11. "Rabbi gives us pace, directness and a real threat in wide areas, while also bringing a positive personality into the dressing room," the manager said. Sporting director Malky Mackay added that Matondo had shown a clear desire to contribute after settling in quickly with the group.
The signing addresses a lack of natural width in the squad as Hibs prepare for a key away fixture. They travel to face Dundee United this weekend, looking to improve on a recent run of form that shows just one win in their last five league matches. The team's current position is a concern, as they are only two points above the relegation play-off spot and five points from the top six.
Subject to the necessary clearances, Matondo will be available for selection against Dundee United on Saturday.
